On the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a rare audio clip of Prime Minister Narendra Modi describing his visit to Kargil during the war has surfaced on social media.
The clip, shared by Modi Archive, highlights the Prime Minister's support for the soldiers during that time. PM Modi who was then responsible for overseeing work in Himachal Pradesh, boarded a Mi-17 helicopter loaded with essential supplies and landed in Srinagar.
During the conversation, Modi thanked the soldiers for their bravery, but they insisted that the credit for the victory should go to then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"In the midst of the Kargil war, I had the honour of visiting Kargil war on the morning Indin Army captured Tiger Hill. As a son of Gujarat, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. As I stood at a height of 18,000 feet surrounded by the blood-soaked bodies of brave soldiers with the joy of saluting the shrine of Maa Bharati it was a memorable experience for me. The jawans wondered what this man in Kurta pajamas was doing at 18,000 feet surrounded by bombs, guns and pistols. I informed the soldiers that I had come to congratulate them. It was July 5. A jawan said, "brother I am glad you have come but if you wish to congratulate please convey it to Atal Bihari Vajpayee". I said, "Why is that, brother? You shed blood, you embraced martyrdom you put in effort for the country. It is you who gave your life for the country. It is your courage, your valour, your sacrifice and I should congratulate Atal Ji?" He said "Yes!". "Could there be a special reason for that?" And he revealed that the reason was the strength of India. The jawan explained that usually in the event of a war, the army would leave the bunker at dusk and go into battle in the dark. What was the reason for that? It was because the enemy was positioned on top. The slightest movement on the icy terrain could make them visible to the enemy putting their lives at risk. So the battle was fought in this manner.
In the evening, they would wait for the sunset before leaving. Everyday they said, they would fight. Five to twenty of them would lose their lives on one front and two to five would lose their lives on another. A lot of fierce battles took place, yet victory remained elusive. They would return the following day, get ready again, and leave. Moreover, you must have seen that martyrs were sacrificed daily to capture Tiger Hill. There were fights every day. He narrated an incident that occurred the day before while they were listening to the news on the radio in the bunker. The radio broadcast mentioned that American president Bill Clinton had invited Atal Bihari Vajpayee to visit America. Washington's invitation was here but the Prime Minister of India declined stating that while his soldiers were on the battlefield, he does not have time to visit America. As soon as the jawans heard that the Prime Minister had turned down the invitation of the president of the United States, they raised their guns on their shoulders and decided it would be more thrilling to go to martyrdom under such leadership.
That very night, they achieved victory and hosted the flag high. This exemplifies the essence of political will. A will so strong it drives a Jawan on the soil of Kashmir to risk their life and die on the world of his leader. When this kind of boldness, understanding and patience reside in the leadership of India. A leadership which has the ability, a spirit of survival, a conquering mentality,an ardent desire for victory, and diplomatic skills."
The Prime Minister also met the wounded heroes of the conflict during his visit.
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of "Operation Vijay", declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.
The day is observed as 'Kargil Vijay Diwas' to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in the war.
