PUNE: On Friday, the police filed their first chargesheet in court in the Porsche crash case of May 19 against seven people: the teenager’s father (a city-based builder), mother, two doctors — Ajay Taware and Shrihari Halnor — and mortuary staffer Atul Ghatkamble of Sassoon General Hospital (all three now suspended), and two middlemen — Ashfaque Mankandar and Amar Gaikwad.
Taware was then the head of forensic sciences department and Halnor was the casualty medical officer at the hospital. It is the police’s case that Halnor acted on Taware’s instructions to dispose of the teenager’s blood sample and it was replaced with the blood sample of the minor’s mother.

“We have stated that the minor’s parents bribed the public servants and the latter conspired to manipulate the blood test with help from the two middlemen,” a senior police officer, privy to the chargesheet details, told TOI.
The minor in the May 19 crash, according to the police, was driving the car while returning to his home at Wadgaon Sheri after partying with friends at a couple of pubs at Mundhwa.
Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, “I won’t comment much for now about the evidence relating to individual roles. For us, all the seven accused are part of a conspiracy to destroy evidence in the case and used a bribe to manipulate the teenager’s blood alcohol test.”
Kumar said, “Our plea for sanction to prosecute the three public servants is pending before the appropriate state authority. For now, we have filed the first chargesheet. We are continuing with further investigation in the case. A final report related to the child in conflict with law (CCL) has already been filed with the JJB.”
Additional commissioner of police (crime) Shailesh Balkawade said, “The preliminary chargesheet has been filed under section 173 (8) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. We will be filing a supplementary chargesheet in due course as we are yet to get some reports, including those related to DNA profiling.”
Statements of 50 witnesses have been recorded and submitted with the chargesheet. “They include eyewitnesses,” Balkawade said. CCTV evidence collected from various spots, panchanama reports, crash impact assessment report, and Forensic Sciences Laboratory reports are part of the chargesheet, Balkawade added.
Lawyer Shishir Hiray, who has been appointed public prosecutor in the case, said, “The preliminary chargesheet is a comprehensive document featuring all evidence collected so far and a strong case is built in the matter.”
The police have mentioned section 304, 279, 337, 338, 427, 120(b), 201, 213, 214, 466, 467, 468, 471, 109 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, section 7, 7(a), 8, 13 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and section 184, 185, 119 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act in the chargesheet.
